hey-- i used to have really awful ITB flare ups too.

Strengthening my hips/core REALLY helped me. Granted, I wound up taking 2 years off of running for other reasons so I had lots of time to work on that, but yeah-- newer studies have shown that the hips/core play a much bigger role in injury prevention than previously thought.

I think the theory is, stretching might help alleviate the pain, but if you're stronger at the hips, you're less likely to irritate it in the first place & your running stride will be better.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19013697

Slightly [hah] more practical:

Idk if you ever got a foam roller or not, but omg I love mine! Seriously it's been a huge help at keeping my back/hip/ITB stuff loose.

Oh man! My IT band was always in so much pain using the foam roller. I need to work on my stretching too. Hopefully it won't set you back and you'll still be able to run the marathon!

Confirmation of the problem is always a great way to start recovery. The second stretch, i find to work better than the first. Hope your IT band starts to feel better.
