NYC firsts: riding the bus and NYC running co run!

Second day in NYC!  Despite the fact that I don’t have curtains on my windows (yet…), I still managed to still until 10:30…oops!  Still hard to kick those evening shift habits!  I need to start waking up earlier so it’s not a total shock when I start my job.  Anyway, my main goal of the day was to put away more of my stuff, which I thought would require some sort of shelf/storage system because I have a TON of kitchen and baking stuff and Manhattan kitchens aren’t exactly known for their spaciousness.

Like huge grocery stores, stores like Target and Walmart aren’t exactly common In Manhattan.  A brand new Target opened in Harlem, which actually isn’t too far from me, but my very concerned parents had told me to stay out of Harlem.  I consulted my seasoned NYCers on Twitter, and they assured me that I would be fine.  One of my biggest fears was taking the bus, since I never know when to hit the “Stop Requested” button, nor do I necessarily know where the bus will stop.  I faced my fears and took the bus since it was closer than the subway, and it went off without a hitch.  Luckily, someone presses the “Stop Requested” button for pretty much every stop, so I didn’t have to worry about that.

Target was glorious, and next time I’ll certainly have to buy $3843 worth of stuff and take a taxi back…since there’s no way I’m carrying eight million toiletries on the subway/bus.  Prices were much more reasonable, and I’m sad that I couldn’t buy ice cream, especially since they had Turkey Hill Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, which is one of my favorites.  Maybe I can find it closer and all will be right with the world.  In the meantime, I picked up some M&M’s and fruit snacks to hold me over.  Works for me.

The main miracle of the day was that all of my kitchen stuff fit in the cabinets and I didn’t end up needing the shelving that I bought…although that ended up getting put into the bathroom!  Thanks to deep cabinets and a roommate without a ton of kitchen stuff, success was mine.  Gotta love it.

new york running company

Thanks to the glory of the blogging world and Twitter, my new neighbor Betsy invited me to the group run sponsored by the New York Running Company.  She assured me that they were fast…and fast they were!  We met at the store, and it was great to see a semi-familiar face.  We joined the group that was running seven miles and headed toward the park.  I wasn’t quite sure how fast they would be running, but our first mile was 7:41, and then we sped up to 7:02!  Yikes!!  Our next mile was 7:34, followed by 6:44 (double yikes…), which was followed by my garmin losing satellites.  I lost the group with about half a mile to go, but I like to think I did pretty well overall…those were some fast splits!  We ran on the bridle path through Central Park, which is a dirt path and excellent to run on.  Still loving the millions of runners out in NYC!

My group…”the fast group”…was actually four girls and five guys, which is pretty cool for a fast group since it’s rare to find more girls than guys in a fast group.  One girl is brand new to the city as well, and she ran track for Georgetown, so clearly she’s speedy!  It’s nice to know that there are FAST people to run with…even if I had a little trouble keeping up at the end!

Wednesday, September 8
7.0-ish miles in 53:45, avg pace of 7:41

My Garmin lost satellites after about five miles, so those stats may be a little off…but it was a speedy run!  The running store had pita chips and hummus for us afterwards, which was delicious because I wanted hummus earlier today, but I forgot to buy it.  I’ll definitely be checking out this running group again!

Oh…and how awesome is it that Betsy is (almost) literally my neighbor??  Thanks blogland!

So glad that you are making new running friends in NYC! I have a runner friend up there who runs with the NYRR. Her name is Emily and she’s running the NYC marathon in a few weeks!

Hi Susan! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I DO live on the UES…70th and 1st. And yes, shopping is SUCH a bitch! You’re probably not going to like hearing this but I actually usually go down to 14th street to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods to do my shopping. The only store near me is the Food Emporium which is crazy overpriced…it’s more expensive than Whole Foods if you can believe that. Fairway, over the UWS is another awesome grocery store that I love going to.

So cool that you joined NYRR! I tend to run with Team In Training so I haven’t met up with those guys yet but maybe once my current TNT season is over, I’ll join in the NYRR fun!

mmmmm fruit snacks are a very acceptable substitute for ice cream IMO. And as far as running a race together, maybe I’ll employ your pacing skills when I’m looking for a BQ in the future. ;)
