dinner friends and the rain
Saturday marked my last shift on days until 2012 (how sad!), and I spent the day doing my normal thing at work and staring out the window at the beautiful day that was unfolding before me. As I checked out twitter towards the end of my shift, I spotted this tweet from Christine:
To which I responded:
And she replied…
After my shift, I headed over to her apartment for a fun, relaxed night with some of my favorite runner ladies! Christine made some delicious veggie lasagna, stuffed mushrooms, and strawberry parfaits. Lindsay joined us with some wine as we watched She’s the Man (best movie…ever) and chatted about all things running (you know, sweating, long run fuel, shirtless guys in Central Park…), jobs, blogs, food, and how awesome the NYC running crowd is. Definitely a fun, low key night (in scrubs!) with some new friends…blogging has definitely been good to me! Thanks for a fun night, ladies! Hopefully we can do this again soon.
a run in the rain
If you’re in NYC, you know that it started pouring on Saturday night and didn’t stop until…Monday morning? It rained allllll day on Sunday. I had a lazy morning in bed with some coffee and my teddy bear (I’m cool…) before heading out into the rain. I actually really love running in the rain every now and then…it’s definitely cooler out and can definitely be fun to splash through the puddles.
I headed out for a quick run in the park after my long run on Friday. I was in my I <3 SWEAT shirt, which was fabulous. The rain was more like a constant sprinkle rather than a downpour (which I was secretly hoping for…), but it was fun to be out there in the rain. It was around noon-ish, so not too many people were out, but I always love the silent camaraderie of runners out there in conditions where many people just stay inside. Makes me want to yell, “Let’s be friends!” (Especially to the guy in the red shorts…we should really be friends.)
Made it home after eight miles, and it was fun to be dripping from the rain instead of from sweat!
Sunday, August 14
8.24 miles in 1:05:46, avg pace of 7:59
That wraps up 53 miles for the week…not too shabby!
back to nights
It seems like just yesterday I was just saying that I would be on day shift for two months, and now those two months are up! It’s been a fabulous two months, and while I can’t say I’m looking forward to day sleeping and black out curtains, I am excited that I have a great group of runner friends to look to for runs on any given day of the week. Don’t forget about me in my nocturnal state!
Do you like to run in the rain?

I LOOOOVE running in the rain <3
Good luck with your upcoming return to night shifts!
I have actually never ran in the rain! I hope you make the transition back to night shift quickly! Definitely no fun but you will rock it!
Running in the rain can be fun but not so much during a hard workout or race for me. It’s fun for nice, easy runs where you just feel carefree!
Depends – I never get all that excited when to run when its raining, but once I get out there, its not so bad! If its lightening, that’s another story – ha! I’m like a golden retriever when it comes to lightening if I’m outside!
Wished I lived on the UES, too!
Good luck with the switch to nights! How does that affect your running schedule? When will you be running now? That’s gotta be tough. My sister-in-law has been a nurse for 20+ years and can fall asleep anywhere at any time because of her need to get sleep at all hours of the day.
Yay, Saturday night was so fun! Definitely will do it again soon
I also enjoy running in the rain. It’s soothing and freeing, almost. I went around 2pm and it started as a light drizzle but turned into a hardcore downpour (which is exactly what I wanted) by the end. I’ve found wearing a hat (and putting my raggedy hair into a braid) are key when I run in the rain! By the end, it’s not even worth it to dodge puddles.
Good luck with your return to night shift!!
I ran in the rain yesterday too and loved it! It’s never as bad as I think it’s going to be, that’s for sure. Next time you guys have a fun get together count me in! That’s my kind of Saturday night lately
Twitter is so magical like that
It must be hard to transition from the day shifts to the night, but you always seem to make it work for you. Don’t worry, we won’t forget about you!
I really enjoy running in the rain most of the time (i.e. when I’m not being a whiney baby about it) – it makes me feel sort of badass, and there’s just something really cathartic about getting soaked when you run. Great week of running for you! Wahoo!
Oh gosh all night shifts brave woman!! Sounds like a perfect dinner I have try out that movie. U r so very brave for going out in the rain. Thoughts on a friday run?
I don’t mind running in light rain, especially in the summer heat, but I’m not a fan of long runs when there’s a torrential downpour (which was the case for about 10 miles of my first ever 18-miler)! Those who can handle night shifts are much stronger than I! I don’t think I could do it.
Boo to switching back to nights! I hope your transition goes smoothly. Hopefully the next few months will fly by and you’ll be on days again before you know it! I am not a fan of running in the rain, so more power to you!
How fun to have a great group of nearby running buddies!
Yes, good luck with the return to nights! How is that for you?
I like running in the rain though it’s not my preference.
I love running in the rain…to an extent. But once I’m well over the hour mark and it’s coming down in sheets, the rain isn’t really so much fun anymore! I feel like I’ve done every long run soaking wet lately, though. Whether it’s the crazy high humidity, or rain, I’m drenched within a couple of miles.
As always, I’m jealous of your NYC running/blogging crowd. I’m glad you’ve been able to connect with so many different people. That’s one good thing to know if I ever move to a new city – I can rely on my blog to help me make friends. (sounds so middle school, haha)
Sorry your time on day shifts is over. Good luck with the switch back!
awww love it! I definitely need to join next time!! and yes, make friends with the runner in red shorts.. sounds like you won’t regret it.
ahaha, I love that you want to be “very good friends” with the dude in red shorts. i will need details on this dude soon.
running in the rain is never my first choice (i think i would really thrive somewhere sunny 365 days out of the year), but as long as it’s not too cold or windy, i don’t mind it. sunday in NYC had record-setting rain, something like 7 inches i think!
saturday night was so fun! … cool kids who eat lasagna, watch she’s the man, and drink wine on the couch. that’s where it’s at.
i love your post and line that “someone busier than you is out there running.” SO TRUE! glad you have been able to get in some solid miles this week!
