some songs on friday.

First of all, thank you all for listening to W(h)ine Fest 2012.  I’ve been complaining about my back for most of the year, and I don’t think there’s much of an end in sight.  I finally had a follow up appointment with the orthopedic surgeon today, but instead I saw the spine specialist instead of the hip specialist.  She basically was like, “Well, the pain is clearly in your back, why did they MRI your pelvis and not your back?”  I don’t know, but at least I know my hips are fine.

So that’s cool.  Well, not really.  Other words of wisdom included saying, “In an otherwise healthy, thin person, I wouldn’t assume fracture unless you’re very osteopenic.”  (I’m not…)  So the current opinion is back to the bulging disc idea.  I asked about the pain being specific and not radiating anywhere, to which she said that if it’s bulging toward the middle and not to one of the sides, then the pain will be localized and not radiate down one of my legs.  Okay, fine.  Although I’m pretty sure the treatment is PT, which hasn’t been working.  Palm —> forehead.

I’m trying just to let go of this and just wait it out, but I’m getting impatient (it’s been over three months!) and I miss running.  I actually like to run, which is shocking to many people, although probably not to anyone who is reading this.  Running has never been exercise to me, it’s just been fun and something I enjoy doing even though sometimes mile repeats are less than comfortable.  But I would take them right about now…

Anyway, a few songs come to mind when I’m thinking about trying to not think about running.  A blog about running lacks content when you can’t run, so I might as well talk about something else.  I know, so helpful.  Here we go:

david crowder band – foreverandever etc

They so upbeat and positive (it’s Jesus music, as I like to call it…), but their music mostly makes me want to dance around my apartment like a crazy person.  Lyrics of the hour:

I think I’m on the brink of something large
Maybe like the breaking of a dawn
Or maybe like a match being lit
Or the sinking of a ship, letting go gives a better grip

Clearly not talking about running.  But letting go of the day-to-day, “OMG I CAN’T RUN” talk will help me be less annoyed about injury.  The ever-wise Meggie who has put up with more of my running/injury talk than one person ever should told me, “Don’t let the emotions of one day get to you too much.”  Working on it…

zac brown band – chicken fried

As my friend Jonathan (hii!) said, “It took you moving to NYC to like country.”  I blame Jocelyn.  Anyway.  Lyrics:

Its funny how it’s the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live, what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes
There’s no dollar sign on a piece of mind this I’ve come to know
So if you agree have a drink with me
Raise your glasses for a toast
To a little bit of chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up

Not running related, again.  But there’s more to life than running (I know, I know, I can’t believe I just said that…okay, not really, I like to think I’m somewhat balanced.), tonight I’m going out with some lovely ladies and I will forget about running.  Hanging out with nurses who are less concerned with marathons has also been nice.

matt wertz – everything’s right

If you don’t know Matt Wertz, you probably should.  I’ve been listening to him every since he played in the backyard of a fraternity house when I was in college.  This is probably one of my favorite songs and it makes me smile just to listen to it.  Because despite the lack of running (FRUSTRATIONNNN), life isn’t so bad.  And I have a relaxing weekend coming up, so thumbs up for that.

Windows down as the night blows in
Tap the beat on the wheel as the tires spin
Until we’re there crank the radio
We’ll join in with the songs we know

Hey, everything’s right, said everything’s right tonight
Hey, everything’s right, said everything’s right tonight

Dear Matt, please come back to NYC.  And bring Ben (Rector), Matt (Nathanson), or Dave (Barnes) with you, please.  Other options welcome as well.

carly rae jepsen – call me maybe

Does this really need an explanation?  I don’t think so.  Just dance, friends.

Any songs to recommend?  Want to hear me whine some more?  Holiday weekend plans?

Why isn’t I’m Too Sexy on this list? :D

Okay, so if it’s a bulging disc issue…did you know I’ve had that? …I was given the option of epidural steroid injections when that happened to me. Mind you this was back around the time you were born and science and medicine may have changed a lot since then, but the freakin’ injections worked. It was supposed to be a series of 3 and after the first 2 I was so much improved that they opted to not give me the third. If it is a bulging disc and you want to talk about it, call me…maybe ;-)

One Direction – “What Makes You Beautiful” — you’ll love it.

Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” got me through my injury.

i think music always helps ease the pain. during the agony of job searching, i listened to a ton of sleeping at last and jon foreman. super mellow, but i swear it helped.

and you and my sister should compare notes. she’s been sidelined from running for months with sciatica. :(

Your pain is so very similar to my pain that I had in my back, and my doctor thought I had a herniated disk too. I really feel for you on that. Good luck, I hope you figure this out soon.
